Your dental health will need a bit of extra thought and care during orthodontic treatment. This is particularly the case if you’ve chosen a fixed brace. This includes both traditional fixed braces and more contemporary options such as lingual braces or braces with ceramic brackets.
Fixed braces are wonderfully effective at creating your ideal smile, but you will need to be careful with certain types of food and drink. Hard and sticky foods can be a problem during this type of orthodontic treatment.
There are two reasons for this:
- Biting into hard foods has a risk of damaging your brace
- Sticky foods can get caught around and behind your brace. This can be difficult to remove with normal brushing, and could lead to plaque or tooth decay over time.
So which types of foods do you need to avoid?
There are some obvious types of food you will need to avoid during your orthodontic treatment. They include:
- Hard apples
- Raw vegetables including carrot and cucumber sticks
- Tough meat
- Hard breads such as baguette or ciabatta
- Hard pretzels
- Chewing gum
- Boiled sweets
There are also some more unexpected foods you’ll need to avoid. These include:
- Corn on the cob
What about other risk factors?
It’s not just about the food you eat. Some people have a habit of chewing on things such as fingernails or pens. This can also put your brace at risk, so it’s important to work to break this habit!
