Tooth Questions: Can your wisdom teeth affect teeth alignment?

Wisdom teeth start to erupt for most people between the ages of 17 and 25. How easy the process is can vary hugely. In some cases wisdom teeth emerge with very little trouble. In others, the process can take years and be reasonably painful.

One of the questions we’re often asked about wisdom teeth is how much of an impact they can have on the rest of your mouth. Most importantly: can wisdom teeth push your other teeth out of alignment? This is often a particular worry for people who have naturally great teeth alignment, or people who have already had realignment treatment and are worried about all their effort being reversed.

The good news here is that you have nothing to worry about! Though wisdom teeth do quite commonly cause problems of their own, they will not affect the rest of your teeth.

Orthodontic studies have shown that wisdom teeth cannot put enough force on the rest of your teeth to move them. This means that the pressure of an emerging wisdom tooth isn’t strong enough to push your other teeth closer together and cause overcrowding.

If you’re having problems with your wisdom teeth, or if you have any concerns about them at all, we’d recommend that you visit your usual dentist.

However, please don’t worry about your wisdom teeth affecting your teeth alignment. If you have a problem with overcrowding or similar, it won’t have been caused by your wisdom teeth.
